Dan Colen earned a B.F.A. from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2001. Colen’s work features painted sculptures with an emphasis on text and graffiti, and often incorporate overlooked materials such as gum, boulders, and pieces of scrap metal. By appropriating low-cultural ephemera into his work, Colen takes undervalued objects and turns them into commentaries of contemporary culture. His artwork has recently been exhibited at FLAG Art Foundation in New York in; the 12th Biennale de Lyon, Paris, in 2013; and at the Brant Foundation Art Study Center in Greenwich, CT, in 2014. His work is also on display in the collection of Saatchi Gallery. Colen lives and works in upstate New York.
