Lin received a Bachelors of Arts degree and Master of Architecture degree from Yale University. She is well known for creating the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. at the age of 21. Through her environmental works, she explores how we relate and respond to the landscape, blurring the boundaries between two-dimensional and three-dimensional space and merging rational order with notions of beauty. Using technological methods of sonar resonance scans and satellite maps, she studies the natural world and translates that information into sculptures, drawings and environmental installations.
