Melanie Moczarski was born in Houston, Texas and grew up in South America. She earned her BFA from Parsons The New School for Design in 2008. She lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. Her work deals with the projection of memory onto the world around, and the subtle experiences that take a while to fit into memory but eventually collect fractions of previous ones. She paints imagined landscapes, hybrid life forms and sculptural surfaces pieced from her own memory and speculation. They are informed by limited first hand experiences as well as the endless projected stuff existing in between. These are objects and spaces that may or may not be. “I am interested in how, more often than not, our experiences of the world around us are more informed by memory and repetition than by the present moment, and in the question of whether or not there is such thing as the present without past. Working with images of nature is particularly interesting and inspiring to me because the natural world exists both in perception and beyond and before it, in a realm that is not of human memory or language.”
