Danger Deep Water 2011

Matisse Patterson

June 1 ‐ June 28, 2011

Matisse Patterson graduated with honors from The School of Visual Arts this May.  She is coming straight out of her art school years with her first solo exhibition entitled, Danger Deep Water, at the Tripoli Gallery of Contemporary Art.

While Matisse has enjoyed and experimented with many different mediums throughout her career as an artist, she is currently fascinated with materials that she finds.

"I try not to alter or overpower my objects, but instead, enhance their qualities by combining them with something else and giving them a new surrounding. In doing so I am able to make the viewer acknowledge these found pieces as art rather than recognize them as objects."

Growing up on the East End of Long Island, the beach sign, “Danger Deep Water” is all too familiar; it appears in the sand whenever one of the inlets is opened into the ocean.  The title of this exhibition is not only relevant as a found object that appears in one of the artist’s sculptures, but it also refers to the present time and the delicate state of our earth.  It is suggestive of the idea that with one more step we might be consumed by the water that surrounds us.  In a society of constant consumption, Matisse chooses to revisit objects that have been disregarded by others and breathes new life into them, embellishing their natural beauty.
