Not Everyone Gets a Unicorn

July 22 ‐ August 10, 2010

Not Everyone Gets a Unicorn

In this exhibit, Darius Yektai (BA Art History, The American University in Paris) demonstrated his capacity and knowledge of painting and technique, as well as his depth of emotion.  A recent recipient of the “Best Representational Work,” in the Annual Members Show of Guild Hall, 2010 by Ben Genocchio, former art critic for The New York Times. Darius also received a “Best Sculpture” award in the 2008 Guild Hall show by Linda Jablonsky, as well as a “Best in Show” award in the 2002 Guild Hall show by Amei Wallach.

Darius Yektai is above all a romantic, for he loves clearly and completely.  One doesn’t always know what he is thinking when he makes these paintings, but they lead you to your own interpretation of the unicorn and of love and life. Darius says, “Postmodernism … (means) that everyone is right.  Titles lead to ideas about narrative but the narrative is specifically open to interpretation.”

Not Everyone Gets a Unicorn is a visual representation of the artist’s life; the unraveling of his destiny, which Darius continues to travel through and discover.  The symbolism of the mystical Unicorn is appropriate; her elusive beauty cannot be obtained, only appreciated.  The unicorn may be symbolic of the women in his life; beautiful, loving, caring, yet independent, and aloof.  Impossible to keep, tame, or reign in, their presence and devotion is a fleeting moment of bliss compared to long hours alone.

Through this series, Darius learned to embrace the idea, (instead of struggling against it), that the Unicorn is his to hold temporarily and, just as the Unicorn lives without the restraint of reins, so too must his beloved.  Instead of dreading the time he is without her, he learns to enjoy his moments with her and accept the fact that she will run away to find her own destiny. Darius says, “Romanticism is truth.” The Tragedy, (mixed media on canvas, 84” x 108”) suggests Darius’ heart, like all hearts, may be at times in sorrow and pain. This is when the Unicorn appears, giving us the dream of love again.
