Southampton, NY – Tripoli Gallery is pleased to present Afterlife, its debut solo exhibition of works by Angelbert Metoyer. On view from September 23 through October 23, the exhibition will open with a reception for the artist on Saturday, September 23rd, from 7 to 9 pm, at 30a Jobs Lane, Southampton, N.Y.

The work of Angelbert Metoyer is multilayered and multifaceted, synthesizing elements derived from quantum expression, astronomy, psychoanalysis, mythologies, the vastness of human history and behavior. Fused with his own memory and interpretation, he weaves and connects geometric diagrams with conjured forms to create a surface that at once brings the viewer into both cosmic realms while facing and confronting the earthly human experience.

Employing materials ranging from coal to glass, oil to mirrors and gold dust, Metoyer explores themes of waste and destruction, of life and death. Cultural complexities are met with existential issues; examining the philosophical questions about multi-dimensionality, teleportation and meditated thought. “For me drawing is an order of various actions that create visions—a way of recalling archetypal memories, which then become the catalyst for creation. Drawing is truth for me, the sound of its movement and focus. The image is what is left over from an ‘encounter’ with the activity of drawing or painting. I only experience the process. The product itself is simply a memory: a door to the experience,” explains Metoyer. Afterlife is an invitation to view and participate in this process.

Angelbert Metoyer was born in Houston, Texas in 1977 and studied at the Atlanta College of Art and Design before transferring to Texas Southern University. His work ranges from painting to sculpture, video to sound art and performance. He has mounted numerous solo and group exhibitions both nationally and internationally and his work can be found in the permanent collections of the Houston Museum of Fine Art, Houston, TX; Williamsburg Museum of 21st Century Art, New York, NY; African American Museum of Contemporary Art, Dallas, TX; Museum of Fine Arts, Leipzig, Germany; MMT Collection, Memphis, TN; Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, Houston, TX; and The ACE Collection, Houston, TX. Included in Tripoli Patterson's first curated exhibition in 2005, followed by the Butter Lane Barn exhibition in 2006, Metoyer has been an integral part of the development of Tripoli Gallery. He currently lives and works between The Netherlands and Houston, Texas.
